Paul Willoughby is the Creative Director of Little White Lies magazine and founding member of the creative agency, The Church of London. His client list has included the New Yorker, Esquire and The Guardian, which promoted his super affinity for editorial illustration. And it is this, coupled with an excellent diversity in terms of style and design, that has lent LWL’s their reputation for issue by issue original visual content. He is guesting on the blog all week (hip-hip) with a post daily and a quick interview…
What have you got planned this week?
I’m making a start on the Apocalypse Now issue of Little White Lies magazine. It’s massively exciting as we’ve never covered such a classic, especially one as iconic as this.
What do your parents think you do?
Create stuff. They’ve always been supportive and trusted my judgement.
Who do you look like?
A combination of a young Gene Wilder, and the tall robber in Home Alone.
What’s your favourite sense?
Smell. I’ve been compared to Grenouille in Patrick Süskinds Perfume.
Tell us something people don’t know about you…
I was the Leicestershire county champion for 50m breastroke when I was 12.
Did your education count?
Certainly. I didn’t always do as I was told but I managed to pick up enough skills from some amazing teachers to find myself here today.
What word can’t you spell?
I’d estimate around 1/3 of the English language. I’m terrible at spelling.
Tell us a good fact
The ancient Greeks couldn’t see the colour spectrum as we see it now. A rainbow was perceived to have only 4 colours. They called the sky “bronze” and the sea “wine dark”.
What’s Next?
A new website for my artwork, then I want to crack on with a line of t-shirts for LWLies.
What’s your ‘Plan B’?
I not sure I have a well defined plan A, let alone a plan B. I wouldn’t mind keeping bees, you can make 100 quid per hive from the honey, perhaps more with nicely designed labels.
